Claude's Docs, Slides and Design tools also came out of testing on October 8 and now work on every plan, including the free one.
Also today: OpenAI's faster, pricier GPT-6.1 Sol, free AI security scans for open-source code, a free week of a Chinese coding model, and new limits on Copilot's coding agent.
Anthropic launched two test features for Claude on October 8, 2026: Dashboards and Motion. Dashboards is for paying subscribers. It connects to business data stores such as Snowflake and Salesforce, turns a plain-English question into a live chart and shows the database query that produced it, so a user can check where the numbers came from. Motion is for Team and Enterprise plans. It builds animations as code and exports them as MP4 videos, without using a video-generation model. To change an animation, you edit a number and export again. Reuters ↗
Update: OpenAI Launches Ultrafast Mode for GPT-6.1 Sol
OpenAI started rolling out Ultrafast for GPT-6.1 Sol on October 8, 2026, in its developer API, in Codex and in ChatGPT Work. OpenAI says Ultrafast runs up to eight times faster than standard Sol. In the API it costs six times the standard price: $12 to read about 750,000 words and $60 to write the same amount. In Codex and Work, only the Pro 500 plan and usage-billed business accounts can use it, and an admin has to turn it on. This is the faster Sol that Codex lead Thibault Sottiaux hinted at on October 4. OpenAI announcement ↗
Anthropic Launches Free AI Security Scans for Open-Source Code
Anthropic opened OSS Scanner on October 8, 2026. The free, opt-in service uses Anthropic's AI models to search open-source software for security flaws. Maintainers sign up by submitting a pull request, and the scans repeat on a schedule. Each report explains the flaw and suggests a fix. No person reviews a report before it goes out. In Anthropic's early checks, 85 of 97 serious findings met its standard for disclosure, and one was a false alarm. Most apps are built partly on open-source code, so fixes made there end up protecting ordinary users too. Anthropic ↗
OpenCode Offers StepFun's Step 5 Preview Free for a Week
OpenCode, a free coding assistant that runs in the terminal, made Step 5 Preview free for seven days starting October 8, 2026. The model comes from StepFun, a Chinese AI company. It can take in about 750,000 words at once and reads images as well as text. OpenCode says it keeps no copy of user data. StepFun says the model files will be available to download on October 15. It has not yet named a license, and the license decides whether businesses can use the model freely. StepFun ↗
GitHub Releases Local Sandboxing for Copilot's Coding Agent
GitHub made local sandboxing generally available in Copilot, its coding assistant, on October 7, 2026. When Copilot's agent runs commands on a user's computer, the sandbox limits which files it can open and which parts of the network it can reach. It also blocks access to stored passwords and keys. Companies can make the sandbox mandatory for all their staff. If the agent runs a wrong or misleading command, the damage stays inside those limits. GitHub changelog ↗
Anthropic Pauses Claude Startup Credits After Application Surge
Anthropic paused new Team plans and $1,000 API credits in its Claude for Startups program on October 9, 2026. In 48 hours it received 21 times as many applications as in the previous five months. Anthropic says it is checking applicants again and may withdraw offers nobody has claimed yet. Credits already claimed are not affected. Claude on X ↗
