OpenAI Resets ChatGPT Usage Limits After GPT-6.1 Sol Slowdown

One email a week: the AI stories that mattered, explained simply.
Every paid ChatGPT account gets a fresh usage allowance at 10 a.m. Pacific on October 2.
Also today: GitHub Copilot starts operating desktop programs, Claude Code opens up to plugins that change how it works, and Cursor adds a low-cost Chinese model that Anthropic has raised a safety warning about.
Thibault Sottiaux, who leads Codex at OpenAI, said on X on October 2, 2026, that GPT-6.1 Sol is running at normal speed again after two days of heavy demand. This continues Sol's launch week: it is the lower-cost OpenAI model News Desk covered on October 1, and it reached paid ChatGPT plans on September 29. So if Sol felt very slow this week, OpenAI says the cause was too many users, not the model itself. Nobody outside OpenAI has measured its speed since the fix. Sottiaux's post ↗
GitHub Copilot Can Now Click and Type in Desktop Apps
GitHub Copilot can now use programs on Mac and Windows computers, clicking, typing, scrolling and dragging the way a person does. GitHub released the feature as a public preview, an early version anyone can try, on October 1, 2026. It matters for older software that offers no other way for an AI to connect. It starts switched off. Typing /computer on turns it on, and employers can block it. GitHub has given no price and no date for a finished version. Linux is not supported. GitHub changelog ↗
Anthropic Lets Plugins Rewrite How Claude Code Works
Anthropic added "mods" to Claude Code, its AI coding assistant, in version 2.1.287 on October 1, 2026. A mod is a small add-on program. It can watch what the assistant does, change an action before it runs, replace a built-in feature or add something new to the screen. Anthropic rebuilt its own /diff command, which shows what changed in your files, as a mod. One thing to know before installing any: a mod has the same access to your computer as Claude Code itself, so a mod from an unknown author gets that access too. Anthropic's post ↗
Cursor Adds GLM 5.3, a Model Anthropic Flagged for Hacking Ability
Cursor, a widely used AI code editor, added two models from the Chinese lab Z.ai, GLM 5.3 and GLM 5.3 Flash, on October 1, 2026. Cursor's documentation lists $1.40 per million tokens of input, where a token is roughly three-quarters of a word. GLM 5.3 is an open-weight model, so anyone can download it and run it on their own machines. That is the concern in a September 29 Anthropic report. It says the downloaded model can chain software bugs into working attacks. It also says people removed its safety refusals for about $4,400 in computing costs. Anthropic's report ↗
DeepSeek Harness Arrives as a Desktop App
DeepSeek released Mac and Windows apps for DeepSeek Harness on September 30, 2026. Harness is DeepSeek's free, open-source tool for letting an AI agent carry out multi-step tasks on your computer. Until now you had to start it by typing commands into a terminal. The apps let you add plugins from a menu and schedule tasks to run later. DeepSeek still calls it a developer preview. Grok 4.7 Appears in xAI's Chat App, Users Report
Several X users, including @cb_doge, posted screenshots and video on October 1 that show Grok 4.7 running inside grok.com and the Grok phone apps. xAI has not announced the change. If the posts are accurate, people who chat with Grok move from version 4.6 to the model developers have been able to buy through xAI's API since September 21. the post ↗
